What is a Learning Technologist?Recent years have seen a new title appearing among the job vacancy ads, that of learning/educational technologist. The terms "learning" and "educational" technologist are equivalent, with "educational" favored in North America while "learning" is preferred in Great Britain. But what exactly does this rapidly growing profession do?

According to the Association for Learning Technology:

"Learning technology is the broad range of communication, information and related technologies that can be used to support learning, teaching, and assessment.

Learning technologists are people who are actively involved in managing, researching, supporting or enabling learning with the use of learning technology."

The role can encompass a broad range of tasks, the most common of which are described below. Essentially, it describes a practitioner in the field of learning/educational technology, ie the application of technology to facilitate learning.

The traditional process of teaching requires both expertise in the field being taught and an understanding of how people learn. Technology-mediated learning, e-learning, requires the additional knowledge of both technology, and how it can enable and enhance learning.

The learning technologist will certainly have a broad knowledge of current technologies, including (but not limited to) the Internet, VLEs and various mobile digital devices. S/he may be a practitioner, eg Web designer/developer, or able to commission the production of new resources, or just able to effectively select and adopt existing resources. Ideally s/he will also have some appreciation of the educational process.

Learning technologists come from varied backgrounds, perhaps Web / multimedia developers who have found a niche in education, or educators who specialized in incorporating technology into their teaching. It is fast becoming a recognized career path with a growing number of institutions offering qualifications in educational technology.

The learning technologist often fulfills an advisory/consultancy role, enabling established teachers utilize technology to better impart their expertise to learners. This could mean improving on-campus education, eg by means of a virtual learning environment (VLE) such as Blackboard or Moodle, or using distance education to make that knowledge available to a whole new audience.

Numerous opportunities exist within the public and private sectors. Universities are employing e-learning to better serve internal students, eg making lectures and notes available online, and to expand into distance learning. Corporations are finding e-learning to be an efficient and effective means of training their workforce.

The learning technologist may also find themselves in the more sensitive role of "champion" for new technologies, particularly within the public/university sector. In this case management has decided e-learning is the way forward and the learning technologist is charged with "selling" the idea to an unconvinced or skeptical staff.

E-learning is now an established part of education and seems set to continue growing exponentially for the foreseeable future. This growth also brings a growing need for talented practitioners able to contribute to the successful application of technology to learning. For those who can identify and exploit those technologies that truly add value to the learning process there will be high demand and commensurate rewards.

What If Your Boss is Your Bully? - Tips to Handle the Ordeal PDF Print E-mail

What If Your Boss is Your Bully? - Tips to Handle the OrdealStories abound about boss who instead of observing proper decorum in the workplace to be model of decency to his workers, he is the one tormenting them - making them see the monster hiding behind him; thus, making them cower in fear whenever they see him in the office. A lot of workers then would think of running away from work through the fastest exit possible just to avoid his presence and all. Well, before you let yourself go insane, try any of these to solve the problem.

1. Ask the help of other workers who might be in the know of this. Brainstorm among yourselves on how to pin down this bully into his own medicine by hiring other bullies to bully him. If sowing fear is his way - give him lots of it. Of course, be creative enough to devise ways and means for this.

2. Know some background information about your boss. From there, you could think some ways on how to find his weak spots and it is up to you to use such information for a ploy meant to teach him a real lesson or two, and stop his bullying.

3. Tell him straight in his face that you are no longer comfortable with his bullying and you need to report him to proper authorities. Here, you must summon your stock courage to beard the lion in its den.

4. Get the help of someone you think whom he would listen to. Someone in his circle of influence who could be of help telling him to shape up.

5. Pray for a miracle that he would wake up one day a changed man. Well, nothing is impossible in earnest prayers. Who knows, such prayers of yours could do wonders for this misguided, immature creature who might be just needing attention and all!

I WILL Get That Job - The Power of Positive ThinkingIf you are going to give your career any chance of success and you want to really make a difference to your job prospects, then you simply have to adopt positive thinking. Every day, every hour, every second, you need to challenge old, negative ways of thinking and start thinking about success.

But isn't that easier said than done? After all if we all thought in a positive way, then we would all still face disappointment as only 1 person can succeed in any job interview?

Well that in itself is a negative way of thinking and it should be eradicated. Instead what you have to focus on is success. Imagine yourself at interview: calm, collected, engaging with the interviewing panel, articulate and charming. Then you need to think about how you will react when you are offered the job.

Always make these images as clear as you can. Focus on what you are wearing, how your voice sounds. Can you make your voice stronger, calmer? Can you make the image stronger?

Concentrate on the image above every day for at least 10-20 minutes. Every day make the image clearer and your voice stronger and so on.

Take time every day to repeat positive affirmations; such as 'I am calm, confident and I succeed'. Repeat these affirmations at least 20 times per day.

Imagine success. Imagine the good feeling that it brings. Feel it. How tall do you feel? How alive and vibrant do you feel? Then carry these feelings with you as much as possible and if ever a negative thought creeps into your head, then refresh the feeling of success and banish those negative thoughts forever.

The power of positive thinking really is immense. Most if not all of the best recruitment agencies attest to the fact that the people who are most confident and think more positively will be the ones to secure the best jobs, the highest salary etc. So what are you waiting for: kick-start your career with some positive thinking this instant.
