South Korea's largest mobile operator, SK Telecom Co has announced plans to run a trial network in its home market of TD-SCDMA, Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access, or TD-SCDMA, was developed by the Chinese Academy of Telecommunications Technology in collaboration with Datang Telecom Technology and Germany's Siemens AG, and was included among the family of UMTS standards by the ITU.

April 10 2007, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao stopped by an SK Telecom test center that is working on a TD-SCDMA network, After greeting SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, Premier Wen entered the test center and used a cell phone to make a long-distance video call to Wang Xudong, China's information industry minister, in Beijing. After finishing his phone call, Wen said, "It's surprising how clear the screen is. I feel very happy about working with SK Group."

Nokia would sell TD-SCDMA mobile phones

World’s largest mobile phone maker Nokia has confirmed that they would be selling phones capable of supporting the China’s 3G mobile technology TD-SCDMA in the Chinese market.

They expect to launch these phones in the first half of next year. They should be available by the time Chinese telecom companies deploy this next generation network in the country.

Thomas Jonsson, Nokia’s spokesman in China spoke about the company’s plans: “Currently we see that there will be market need from the first half of 2008. Hence, we will have some kind of offering on the market.”

The mobile phone makers would be supported by other international players including Nokia Siemens Networks, Motorola, Ericsson, Nortel Networks who are working on developing equipments to power the network.

Market analysts have said that this new network technology could result in a potential $10 billion of network equipment orders.
