Illegal Interview Questions - You Say What? PDF Print E-mail

Illegal Interview Questions - You Say What? Are there illegal interview questions an employer can ask during an interview? Yes there are and if the employer chooses to ask them they can face legal implications at the Federal, State, and Civic level. Still, many employers are ignorant of the law or choose to disobey it.

Job interview questions should be focused on what the employer needs to know to make an informed decision when hiring. Are you, based on the qualifications outlined in your resume and the requirements of the job, the "most qualified" candidate? When employers stray from job-related questions to personal ones discrimination issues can become a factor.

The law is clear on specific employment discrimination categories such as race, color, sex, age, and disability. However, employers can circumvent the law by stating the questions are related to the specific performance of the job. Even so, there are illegal interview questions they shouldn't ask. Whatever situation you find yourself in during the interview process it's your decision on whether or not you answer the questions.

What are some of the interview questions that are illegal to ask and how you can handle them?

Any question that deals with your personal life is a question that shouldn't be asked.

  • Are you married?
  • Are you divorced?
  • Do you have a significant other?
  • Do you have children?

Politely tell the employer that while you're at work you will devote your time to work, but what happens in your personal life is personal.

You can also ask the employer how the question relates to the job and why they want to know. The work might be such that they want to know if you're committed or capable of working for them. A utility company is a public service company and usually requires their employees to work overtime as required.

Any question that's related to sexual orientation, age, race, physical capability, etc. is illegal to ask in the interview. You do not have to reply to these questions.

  • How old are you?
  • Do you have any disabilities?
  • What's your ethnicity?

It can be a very uncomfortable position to be in when faced with these kinds of questions. Take note of the time, date, names of people present during the interview and be prepared to file a complaint if necessary.

You can obtain up-to-date information on illegal interview questions employers should avoid by contacting your local government office (labor relations) or the Federal Equal Employment Opportunity office. A quick Internet search prior to the interview will reveal the types of questions that are illegal in an interview.

How to Put the Brakes on Your Career-Change! PDF Print E-mail

Published in : Career Advice, General Career Advice

How to Put the Brakes on Your Career-Change!If you want to stop yourself dead in your tracks while finding your passion-filled career believe this..."I can't make enough money doing what I love. This belief alone is strong enough to keep people from exploring new and interesting careers. Often I hear client's saying, "I love doing ________ but I could never make enough money at it." They keep searching for what they want to do which is hard because they have already discounted the business/career they really wish they could have! In fact often this belief is used as an excuse to avoid exploring ANY options.

The fact is when we say "I can't" those two little words will shut down creativity faster than a spring loaded trapdoor. All of a sudden we wonder why we can't seem to get any good ideas. The problem is we just told our mind "I can't" and the subconscious which is always trying to make us right says,"That is right you can't make money doing anything you love so no more ideas for you!"

What if we changed that belief to, "I make excellent money doing what I love."? How would that change our exploration process? My guess is that we would explore different options with greater enthusiasm and lightheartedness. We would keep our minds open and creative. All of a sudden we would see more options then we thought possible. (The hard part may be to choose the best one for us but that is the topic for another article!)

Here are some simple exercises you can do to help you change your limiting belief, "I can't make money doing what I love." to a supporting belief, "I make excellent money doing what I love." First begin noticing people who make great money following their passions. Ask around, read biography's, listen to the news to find people who are thriving and loving their work. If one of those successful people is doing what you wish to do use them and their business as a model. There is no need to start from scratch. Find out how they took what they loved and made it successful.

Another way to not only change your belief but also open up your creativity is to enlist the help of a supportive, positive friend for a brainstorming session. Start with what you love and want to do and then come up with ways that you can earn money with your beloved career/business. What passive income streams can you develop? Often people who are financially successful doing what they love have several revenue streams. How many can you think up? Be willing to be outrageous in your brainstorming. Many times from those crazy, "impossible" ideas come some very workable, successful ideas. Keep open and have fun!

You can create a abundant career/ business you love. The first step is to believe it. Everyday state the belief you wish to have. The belief that will support you in reaching your dreams. Soon you will be the one that inspires others to believe that they too can make plenty of money doing what they love!

Work at Home - Scams and How to Identify Them! PDF Print E-mail

Work at Home - Scams and How to Identify Them!To protect yourself from the merciless tentacles of the scam monsters, especially in the "work from home" field, you must know certain facts. Learn to identify which sites are possible scam sites. There are many signs and to a trained set of eyes, it is very easy to spot the motive of any site offering jobs. On the contrary, a simple person, who has no such knowledge is liable to fall prey to these scams. It is imperative, therefore, to know how these sites operate, and then how to stay away from them.

The site that advertises great moneymaking jobs are obviously trying to attract the attention and money of the anxious job seeker. The "get rich fast" schemes and "make more money by working less" type of advertisements are the best examples of how a scam site works. There are absolutely no known "get rich fast" practically working schemes. Even if there were such schemes, who would give them away to strangers? If such schemes worked effectively every time, then there would be no poverty, and no need to seek any job! Such sites are definitely trying to cheat the expectant job seekers, and are to be avoided.

The sites that require you to pay up front for their services can be scam sites as well. Although some sites do ask for up front payment, most of the other sites will definitely cheat you after getting the payment. A good job-providing site will never ask for any sort of up front payment from job seekers. The sites that do not ask payment up front are to be marked as potential legitimate sites and researched further.

Ask the site managers some job related questions: A site that is legitimate and offers genuine jobs will definitely answer your questions. They have nothing to hide and require more people to use their web site. They will display sections on frequently asked questions and can display the names of the companies that use their services. These factors build the trust in the mind of job seekers. Any job is a contract of trust to begin with, and a website that builds genuine trust is a site to look for. Of course, a further investigation is needed before you fill the forms on these sites.

In case you have joined a scam site and have recognized your mistake, do not wait any further and stop working for them. If you have not been paid even after working for them for a couple of months, stop working immediately. The site is definitely a scam site. If you have already given your personal details, including your credit card details, your credit card details must have been passed by them to many other criminals. So, immediately contact your bank, take their advice, and get a new credit card. There could be many people including your own friends who are successfully earning money online through some genuine company. If these people are getting regular payment, then use the services of such companies.

Do a complete research on each website or company that you suspect. Google and Yahoo! Search engines will provide you many search result pages displaying any complaints about such sites.

Protect yourself and your hard-earned money from the scams.

How to Create a Career Development Plan PDF Print E-mail

By David Hults, on 12-07-2008

Favoured : 24

Published in : Career Advice, General Career Advice

Career Development Plan - How to Create a Career Development PlanCareer development plans, in the past, were outlined for an employee by the employer. Employees began employment in an entry-level position and, with increased seniority and additional training, worked their way up through the organization. Career development plans work differently today. Unfortunately, many organizations no longer outline it. Career development plans are up to each of us individually. So how can we create our own career development plan?

This question reminds me of a job I had in which I was required to travel across the nation setting up city-wide seminars. I drove a semi-truck to cities throughout the nation loaded with all of the equipment and materials for conducting the seminars. I set up for the seminars and became the Seminar Assistant Coordinator for the week. Headquarters sent out a staff of five employees who did this. We covered 35 states and averaged 3-10,000 people at each seminar.

It did not take long to notice there were holes in the communication between the "field" staff and headquarters. I was constantly missing information and materials needed. Because I knew the field process and had developed relationships with the staff, it was not difficult for my boss to say "yes" when I approached him about a new position for myself that would give support to the field staff in conducting these seminars. I had identified the problems and knew how to change and correct them because I had lived through the process. Those in the field easily backed my suggested new position because they needed the support and wanted the process to run more smoothly. They knew I could get the job done. This new position came about because I saw a need and had a solution.

I created a new department (Seminar Support Services) and grew the support staff for this Department to 8 employees. So where is the opportunity for career development in your position or at your organization? It lies with you and your creative resources and your observations of what needs to be done. What are your creative resources? The most important is what you enjoy doing!

Here are four career development plan perceptions that will help identify how to jump start your career:

Career Development Plan Perception #1 - Be a resourceful employee.

Find ways to create opportunities but at the same time solve a problem or create value to the organization. As you develop more challenging work for yourself and succeed, your worth to the organization increases. This gives you "the right to be heard" when performance and salary increases are discussed.

Career Development Plan Perception #2 - Know how the organization feels about you and your work.

Always be open to communication and initiate it. If needed, meet with your boss on a monthly basis and talk about your development. For example, ask if you are still on target in your development plan or what things need more work to keep your development plan on track. Stay in charge of your career development. Always ask what you are learning from the position, organization, and experience. If you do not feel you are moving forward, then you are probably losing ground.

Career Development Plan Perception #3 - Do not get too comfortable.

Even when a position is easy and comfortable for you, if it is not a good fit for your success patterns, you are settling for less. Do not settle for less than you can do or accomplish. I have a friend who says that if she is not in an uncomfortable situation, then she is not growing or learning. So she constantly puts herself in uncomfortable situations such as attending a networking event alone. If you get complacent about your work, the organization will do that too. Find a culture that energizes and challenges you.

Career Development Plan Perception #4 - You have been in the position so long now that you do not care about it, or about how you look when you show up for work.

In fact, winning the lottery is your way out of this dead end job. BEGIN TO TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE IN YOUR CAREER AND LIFE! (Yes, I meant that to be in all caps!) If you are in this situation, start writing your exit plan and start exploring other ideas and opportunities.

Bottom line - do not settle for less in your career. Our work involves too much of our time and lives to settle for a complacent, boring or non-challenging position. Create a career development plan to move forward. Have more than one plan of action. If Plan A is to create your own position at the company, then go for it. If that plan goes belly up, try Plan B which might be to move into another area that can increase your experience for that next step up. Always have a plan and keep moving forward!

The Essential Ingredients of a Perfect Job PDF Print E-mail

By Tony Jacowski, on 08-08-2008

The Essential Ingredients of a Perfect JobThe Essential Ingredients

The variables could be salary, hours worked, distance to commute, work ambience, the right boss, or colleagues. It is difficult to spell out an ideal job or what it takes to make one ideal and perfect. It is all a matter of your own criteria.

Actually, no job can hold all the right and perfectly-blended ingredients. Even so, there are certain matters worth considering.

Growth Opportunities

A factor in making a job perfect for you could be potential growth opportunities. Do you see it happening to you? Is there room for growth? Do you feel stagnated? Are you being side-stepped? Are you still at the same position and salary as when you started?

Most organizations have a structured career growth plan and some offer opportunities according to performance. When you see there is no possibility that you are going to progress, then you know it is time to quit and look at other prospects.

Salary

It is a good idea to compare prevailing salaries and benefits for your career level in the local marketplace. Packages may include car and fuel, medical insurance, vacation, and sick time.

Discuss prerequisites in the interview, and if you question whether they are sufficient, ask for some time before you make a decision to take the offer or not.

Your Boss

Your boss plays a very vital role in making your job perfect or making it unpleasant. You may have a good rapport with your boss and the promotions and career growth may be progressing smoothly.

It may also be the other way around, and there may be very little for you to do but to quit. It is as difficult to come by a good boss as it is to find good employees.

Work Functions

Your position, work responsibilities, colleagues, and work environment are all important considerations. There will probably be certain duties asked of you from time to time that do not fit your job description, and you need to make certain it does not become a regular thing.

Any job requires teamwork between a boss and their employees. If the boss is liked and admired by the team, they will put forth efforts to cooperate. But if the boss is unpopular with the team, then the environment is spoiled and the work does not get done. A good boss always has the team on their side.

Work Environment

The work environment needs to be motivating enough to hold your interest and keep you satisfied. Work should not become a drudge. A perfect environment is conducive to work and helps you perform at your best.

Finding the perfect job isn't easy - but by taking the above factors into consideration, you can get as close as possible.

Important Interview Techniques You Should Master PDF Print E-mail

By Tony Jacowski, on 08-08-2008

Published in : Career Advice, Interview Tips

Important Interview Techniques You Should MasterResearch and Practice

Before you go to the interview, you should practice with a friend or family member. Also, it is important for you to do some research about the company, its mission statement, and its products as well as the position you have applied for.

Look at the company's website, its annual reports, and business magazines for such information. If you are aware of details about the company, you will feel more comfortable handling questions like "why do you want to work with our company?"

Additionally, if you have practiced the interview beforehand, you will feel confident when you actually confront the interviewer. Think clearly about your strengths and weaknesses and make an effort to improve to conquer the interview jitters.

First Impression

It's often said that the first impression is the last impression. When you come for the interview, your approach should be polite and confident. While you wait, make sure you are sitting properly. Behave as if every person who passes is an interviewer; you never know when one can be among them.

When you meet the interviewers, greet them with a firm handshake and a smile. You should be dressed formally but comfortably depending upon the company and the type of job.

Bring everything you will need for the interview with you and have your materials neatly organized.

Confident Approach

Do not approach an interview with a despondent attitude; however, appearing to be overconfident is also not a good idea. That said, being confident about your abilities and strengths will work in your favor.

Show that you will be good at your job, but at the same time be humble and friendly. Also, if you sound confident but your body language does not reflect it, then that will harm your chances.

Eye Contact

Maintaining eye contact with the interviewer is very important. Looking around the room or at the windows or at the items on the interviewer's desk will make you appear uninterested - or even suggest that you might be hiding something.

Have a Positive Attitude

You should always have a smile and a positive attitude. Do not respond negatively to things that you do not agree with.

Maintain a smile and point out things that concern you when given the opportunity.

Body Language

Avoid fidgeting while speaking; it reflects a lack of confidence. Also, crossing your arms may suggest that you are a snob. If you bite your lip between responses, it may show that you are not being honest.

Never answer with nods or headshakes and gestures; always answer questions verbally. Confident body language can speak more loudly than words to convey the message that you believe in yourself and your ability to do this job.

Practice Your Responses

Practice your responses to questions that are typically asked in an interview. If you practice the wording and the intonation, you will be able to reply to the interviewer calmly and confidently. You won't be caught on the wrong foot when a simple question might be asked a tricky manner. Also, prepare questions that you may ask the interviewer when given a chance.

These are a few useful interview techniques to help you approach the interview confidently and land the job you want.
